Decorating HELP!

I'm totally stumped. I'm calling on my fellow blogging friends to help me out and give me some ideas on what to do with this:

We've been living in our house for eight months now and I can't figure out what to do with this shelf. At first we had nothing there, but over Christmas we had decorations up there and we really liked it. Now that we've taken all of the decorations down we feel like there is something missing. The problem is we just can't figure out what to put up on that shelf. The only thing I know I don't want to put up there is fake plants. I'm not one for fake plants, plus I'm not exactly excited about having to climb up there and clean the plants when they get all dusty.

So I'm open to any ideas you have. We don't really have a decorating theme going on in our house. It's mostly full of pictures of the kids. However we do have a wine theme in our kitchen. Here are some pictures of my kitchen and living room if that helps conjure up any ideas. THANKS!

What about getting a mirror or a nice big piece of art work to put up there?

girl i feel your pain! we have the same deal, but in a different place in the foyer. i'm uploading a picture to facebook - here's the link. we painted it a color called tobacco road - a designer friend suggested it. i'm not much into tans, but it's an awesome color and just dark enough to be dramatic. then i picked out three really large item at pier 1 and hung a huge art print on th opposite wall. it works. here's the link:

I've always thought this was cool...

although that might be an odd spot to put photos.

I would do a large painting, unframed, and leaning against the wall and put some large, slender vase type pottery or glass pieces beside it.

oh, and art.com has all kinds of wine painting that are reasonable (and large) for under $50.

I like the idea of painting it as an accent wall, then a piece of art leaning on it or a few vases or something. I would suggest nailing or museum puttying everything down in case of an earthquake though :)

Crate and Barrel's site always has a decent outlet and sale section if you need something to fill the space!

I was thinking a few pieces of pottery, possibly African, Asian, or Southwestern inspired. 3 different sized pieces would look awesome.

I am with Jess, a BIG painting or a REALLY big picture of the kids. Jae has the best ideas, though.
